Anita, a 12-year-old school girl, living in the US is a Tennis enthusiast. Six months ago she started complaining of fatigue and extreme nausea. After initial assessment, she was referred to a Paediatrician, who kept her on observation for two weeks. During the observation, few other symptoms such as frequent headaches, light-headedness, trembling and fainting were seen. The paediatrician suspected a rare heart condition and she was referred to a Cardiac Specialist. After due tests her condition was diagnosed as Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome. This devastated the parents, their child who was extremely active had to, now make extensive life style changes, there were numerous unanswered questions

Dharshan, an 18 month old child’s parents were worried. They had discovered an odour of a dead rat in the urine passed by the child. They had shown it to five different physicians which included two general physicians, one municipal hospital, one paediatrician and one second opinion from a private paediatrician and were just back from their fifth visit to the fifth paediatricians, and after multitudes of urine culture analysis and tests, the condition was still inconclusive. The earlier doctors had tried various types of treatment including broad-range antibiotics to changing the cough syrup. However, the symptoms remained and this was causing a great distress to the parents.

The parents approached Knowurture with this problem. Knowurture ran the interactive medical history collection interview to the patient’s care giver, specific question regarding activities of daily living and nutrition were asked.
It was observed from the interview that the parents had a congenital marriage, the child showed below normal growth in addition to the present smelly urine condition. The observations of the interview were sent to its specialist endocrinologists and paediatricians who advised specific Blood tests to check for reveal elevated phenylalanine, which tested positive. The child was diagnosed with Phenylketonuria (PKU), a condition where the body cannot digest protein. Left untreated, it may result it below normal development and brain disorders. The child was put on protein free diet and medication to continue with continuous follow-up.
